Man Charged With First Degree Murder After Strangling Boyfriend To Death

WOODLAWN, Md. (WBFF) -- On Thursday night, just before midnight, Baltimore County Police responded to an assault between a couple in Woodlawn that left one of them dead.

Baltimore County Police were called to the unit block of Walden Cypress Court , but when they arrived they found one of them in cardiac arrest.

The initial investigation has determined that the couple had a verbal dispute that escalated into a violent physical fight.

At some point during the altercation they both fell to the ground, with the suspect on top, who grabbed some nearby electrical cords and strangled the victim, Elijah McKeith Smalls, 39, who then went into cardiac arrest.

The suspect, Calvin Fernanda Phair, 47, was performing CPR on the victim when police arrived. Baltimore County EMS personnel were called and continued life-saving efforts but the victim was unresponsive and pronounced deceased at the scene.

Phair is charged with 1st Degree Murder and 1st Degree Assault.

He is currently being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

Friends say the two had been in an on again off again relationship and this was not their first altercation.
