Man Kills One Night Stand After Discovering He Stole His ID and Debit Card

Joseph Olopo (right), 21, was stabbed to death by Jason De Sousa(left)after a fight erupted in February this year.

Armed with a knife, De Sousa, also 21, had arranged to meet with Mr Olopo on the night of Friday, February 17 to retrieve his driving licence and debit card which hey says Olopo stole from his wallet while the two met up for an intimate encounter.

In the days leading up to the killing, De Sousa had made threats of violence towards Olopo and others who he believed were in possession of his licence and debit card, the court was told.

A fight broke out shortly before 8pm between, De Sousa, Olopo, and two other men, who were all armed with weapons.

Olopo was stabbed in the neck by De Sousa and died in hospital later that night.

Witnesses say they saw De Sousa run from the scene and was arrested five days later in a hotel.

De Sousa was found guilty of manslaughter on Tuesday. He was found not guilty of murder.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

Detective Inspector Shaun Fitzgerald, who led the investigation, said: "This was a violent attack on a man with his whole life ahead of him.

"The dispute was over documents each person had in their possession and for that small reason, Joseph lost his life.

"I hope today's verdict will go some small way to helping Joseph's family to move on from this tragic incident."
