Its time to throw Smithers a coming out party. The writers The Simpsons have announced that the assistant of the evil Mr Burns will finally come out as gay in Season 27 of The Simpsons. The show’s executive producer Al Jean revealed earlier this week that Mr Smithers’ journey to self acceptance would be a big part of the new season.
It will also explore Smithers’ relationship – and unrequited love obsession – with his boss Mr Burns.
“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” Jean told TVLine.
“We deal with that in two episodes. We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”
Fans breathed a sigh of relief earlier this year, when it was confirmed that Smithers would not be leaving The Simpsons – after the character’s voice actor signed a last-minute deal to return to the animated show.
Harry Shearer, who voices a number of characters on the animated show, previously confirmed his plans to leave after 26 seasons on the show, following the breakdown of contract negotiations in May.
The actor voices both Mr Smithers and his boss Mr Burns.
Mr Smithers’ sexuality has long been a source of comedy on the show, and he has made a number of lists as one of the most famous gay TV characters.
However, as the series grew other characters have come out – with Marge’s sister Patty coming out as a lesbian in 2004, and Duffman outed as gay in 2008.
