Teen catfishes more than 100 boys as ‘Haley’ to get nudes

A Pennsylvania high school senior was busted Thursday for catfishing more than 100 boys to get them to send him nudes.

Derrick Jones, 18, would pose as a girl named “Haley” on various apps to reach out to the boys, some of whom were in middle school, news station WDAU reported. His so-called “Haley” guise was a real girl whose identity he stole using photos from Tumblr.

“They believed that they were receiving naked pictures of a teenage girl and so they were responding to Haley thinking that it was a teenage girl that was interested in them. Unfortunately, it was not,” Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said at a Thursday press conference.

Jones, a Monsignor Bonner Catholic High School student, created bogus accounts on Instagram, Kik, WeChat and Snapchat to communicate with at least 136 victims, according to officials.

“We expect there are going to be many more victims in this particular case,” Whelan said.

Investigators said Jones would sometimes share nude photos of his targets on apps to blackmail them into sending more racy images. In one instance, he allegedly sent explicit images to the victim’s family and friends to shame him.
Using his IP address, authorities were able to track down Jones, who is from Glenolden, Pennsylvania.

He confessed to posing as “Haley” to get the photos for his own pleasure, according to an affidavit.

Jones was charged Thursday with manufacturing child pornography, possession of child pornography, corruption of minors, stalking and other crimes. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 31.

Officials said he could face expulsion from his school.

“This information is deeply disturbing to all of us,” the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said in a statement. “Our immediate concern is for those who were or may have been victimized. Our understanding is that Delaware County Detectives have been in contact with individuals they have reason to believe could be a victim in this matter.”
